Importing logs

Supported log formats (NKE .LOG and .nkz)

BeginnerUpdated

Avelsta accepts .nkz files from the NKE Processor HR and .LOG files (NMEA 0183) from the NKE Box USB Datalog WiFi datalogger. Data read and special cases.

The essentials

Avelsta recognises the format of each uploaded file automatically. Two formats are read today:

File Hardware Content
.nkz NKE Processor HR instrument processor Recording of the processor
.LOG NKE Box USB Datalog WiFi datalogger (Box WiFi) NMEA 0183 text recorded by the box
  1. Retrieve the files recorded by your instruments, without editing or renaming them.
  2. Upload them as they are, as many as you like at once (500 per upload).
  3. A file in another format is flagged “Unsupported format” and set aside; the others are processed as usual.

Going further

The data read

Avelsta keeps what the instruments measured or computed, and invents nothing. For a .nkz, these are the sailing measurements recorded by the Processor HR; for a .LOG, the following NMEA sentences:

Data NMEA sentences
Position, speed and course over ground (SOG, COG) RMC, fallback GLL and VTG
Speed through water (STW) VHW
Magnetic and true heading HDG, HDM, HDT, fallback VHW
Apparent wind (AWA, AWS) VWR, fallback relative MWV
True wind (TWA, TWS) VWT, fallback true MWV, MWD
True wind direction (TWD) MWD
Heel and pitch XDR ROLL and PTCH
Current (speed, direction) CUR, computed by the instruments
Depth, water and air temperature DBT / DPT, MTW, XDR
Rudder angle, leeway, log RSA, LWY, VLW
Box VMG, cross-track error, mark VPW, XTE, RMB

Wind angles are signed: positive to starboard, negative to port.

Time

For a .LOG, UTC time comes from the GPS sentences (ZDA, RMC). The box restarts its clock at each “Start logging”: Avelsta aligns each part on GPS time. A file with no usable time at all is marked To date: you enter yourself when it was recorded (see Track an import).

Resolution

Points are read at their original resolution, then brought to a timeline of one point per second per boat. When two files cover the same second, each measure is taken from the earliest imported file that holds it.

Damaged files

Truncated lines, null bytes and sentences with a wrong checksum are discarded and counted. A file with too many unreadable sentences is rejected as corrupted. Details: Import errors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a GPX or CSV file?

Not yet: only NKE logs (.LOG and .nkz) are read. Other formats are planned. An unrecognised file does not prevent the others from being processed.

Do I need to convert the .nkz to NMEA?

No. Upload the .nkz file as it is: Avelsta reads it directly. See Read a .nkz file.

Does importing the same log twice create a duplicate?

No. A file identical to one already imported on the same boat is recognised (“Already imported”) and ignored.
